1. Snowshoe Trekking Across Pristine Snowfields

Explore the rolling hills of Biei, including the famous “Patchwork Road” and “Biei Hills,” on a snowshoe trek. One of the highlights is walking through the iconic filming locations of the drama Kita no Kuni Kara, such as the “Stone House” and “Recycled House” in Rokugo. Since this area is inaccessible by car during winter, you’ll experience complete serenity as you immerse yourself in nature.

2. Ice Fishing for Fresh Wakasagi Smelt

Lake Kanayama completely freezes over in winter, making it the perfect spot for wakasagi (smelt) fishing. Inside a warm tent, you’ll drill a hole through the ice and try your luck at catching fish. The best part? Your fresh catch is immediately fried into crispy tempura for you to enjoy on the spot—an incredibly rewarding winter treat!

3. The Mysterious Unfrozen Pond at Torinuma Park

Even in temperatures as low as -20°C, the pond at Torinuma Park never freezes over. The morning mist rising from the water and surrounding frost-covered trees makes for a truly mystical scene. The best time to witness this stunning sight is around 7 AM, with the scenery remaining visible throughout the morning hours.

4. The Enchanting Blue Pond Winter Illumination

While the famous Blue Pond is frozen and covered in snow during winter, it transforms into a mesmerizing spectacle at night. A special seasonal illumination bathes the entire scene in shades of blue, creating a dreamlike atmosphere. The display follows a 10-minute storytelling sequence, making each visit a unique experience. Don’t miss the illuminated Shirahige Falls, just a five-minute drive away!

5. Takushinkan: A Gallery Capturing Biei’s Beauty

Takushinkan is a photography gallery showcasing the stunning landscapes of Biei, captured by renowned photographer Shinzo Maeda. Housed in a repurposed former school gymnasium, the gallery’s historic charm adds to the experience. Seeing the breathtaking photos may even inspire you to visit the locations yourself!

6. The Gotoh Sumio Art Museum

This museum honors Gotoh Sumio, one of Japan’s most celebrated painters in traditional nihonga style. His works, created with natural pigments such as gold, lapis lazuli, and mineral-based paints, depict European landscapes, China’s scenic spots, and the rich nature of Japan, including Hokkaido. With 130 pieces on display, visitors can admire the intricate details up close.

7. Find Your Perfect Melody at Furano Music Box Hall

Furano Music Box Hall houses over 8,500 music boxes made of glass and ceramics, with 1,000 unique types to explore. Visitors can also take part in a hands-on experience to craft their own one-of-a-kind music box by selecting decorations and materials. The soothing melodies will become a cherished memory of your trip.

8. Kaiku Kiln: A Ceramics Studio with a Dramatic Connection

Nestled at the foot of Mount Tokachi, this pottery studio is surrounded by Japanese larch and white birch trees. It showcases works by ceramic artists Masataka Minami and Izumi Minami, and also served as a filming location for the drama Yasashii Jikan. Visitors can even create their own mugs inspired by those featured in the show.

9. Indulge in Local Dairy Delights at Furano Cheese Factory

Furano is famous for its rich dairy products, and the Furano Cheese Factory is the perfect place to sample them. Try freshly made cheese at the tasting corner or watch the cheese-making process in the production area. Families can also participate in hands-on workshops to make their own cheese or butter—great as a personal souvenir!

10. Handmade, All-Natural Jams at Furano Jam Garden

Furano Jam Garden creates delicious jams using the finest seasonal ingredients from Hokkaido. With no artificial additives, colors, or water, these jams deliver pure, intense flavors.
