Fall brings a different side of Furano into view. The Tokachidake mountain range begins to change color, farms move into harvest season, and cooler weather makes it a great time for scenic drives, local food, hot springs, and hands-on experiences.

If you have two days to explore Furano and Biei, this 48-hour itinerary combines some of the area’s best fall scenery, seasonal flavors, and local attractions.

DAY 1

Start with the Scenery of Biei and Furano

Begin your trip with some of the region’s most recognizable landscapes.

At Biei’s Shirogane Blue Pond, the vivid blue water stands out against the surrounding trees as they begin to change color for fall. Nearby, Shirahige Falls offers another impressive autumn view, with white streams of water cascading between trees filled with shades of red, orange, and yellow.

For fall flowers, continue to Shikisai no Oka, where seasonal blooms such as salvia and dahlias add color across the rolling hills.

From there, take a drive along Biei’s Patchwork Road. During harvest season, the fields, farmland, and changing trees create the wide-open rural scenery that Biei is known for.

Taste the Flavors of Fall

Fall in Furano is also harvest season, making it a good time to enjoy some of the region’s local food and wine.

At Campana Rokkatei, you can enjoy Rokkatei sweets while taking in views of the surrounding countryside. Along with favorites such as the Marusei Butter Sandwich, look for Furano Mochi, a local specialty made with sweet red bean paste mixed with green peas and lightly grilled on both sides.

For something savory, head to Furano Wine House. Located on a hill overlooking vineyards and the Tokachidake mountain range, the restaurant pairs Furano wine with dishes featuring local dairy products, including cheese. Around late October, Furano Wine typically begins releasing its new wine made from grapes harvested that year.

Take a Break at a Mountain Onsen

After a day on the road, a hot spring is one of the best ways to slow things down.

Shirogane Onsen, located along the Biei River, sits at a higher elevation where fall colors usually peak between late September and mid-October. Outdoor baths offer views of the changing forest and the surrounding Tokachidake mountains.

Another option is Tokachidake Onsen, one of the highest hot spring areas in Hokkaido. Its elevation gives visitors sweeping views of the mountains, particularly during fall foliage season. On clear days, you may even catch a sea of clouds stretching across the landscape below.

Unwind at Nozo Hotel

After a full day exploring Furano and Biei, return to Nozo Hotel and take it easy for the evening.

Conveniently located in Furano, the hotel makes a comfortable base for exploring the surrounding area. Enjoy dishes prepared with local ingredients, relax in a warm, wood-inspired guest room, or stop by the bar lounge and settle in by the fireplace.

For families traveling with children, the hotel also has a dedicated kids’ corner, making it easy for everyone to unwind after a day of sightseeing.

DAY 2

Try a Hands-On Experience in Rokugo

Autumn,Field,And,Snowy,Mountains

Start your second day in the Rokugo area, where you can turn some of Furano’s local ingredients and traditions into something of your own.

At Furano Jam Garden, visitors can try making jam using seasonal ingredients such as carrots, pumpkin, and grapes. The jam is prepared without added water, artificial additives, or coloring, allowing the natural flavor of the ingredients to come through. Best of all, you can take your homemade jam home as a souvenir.

Nearby, Glass Forest in Furano offers a range of glassmaking experiences, including glass beads, gel candles, and sandblasting. While you are there, look for the studio’s signature Shibare Glass, inspired by Hokkaido’s diamond dust, as well as Furano no Irodori, a collection designed around the colors of Furano.

Together, the two stops make Rokugo a great place to spend a morning creating something connected to the region.

Spend the Afternoon with Art

After a hands-on morning, spend some time exploring Furano and Biei’s art scene.

For traditional Japanese painting, visit the Goto Sumio Museum of Art in Kamifurano. The museum displays a large collection of works by Japanese painter Sumio Goto, including paintings inspired by seasonal landscapes. His autumn scenes are particularly fitting for this time of year.

For a more playful experience, head to Miyama Pass Art Park. The park includes a trick art museum and the Tokachidake Art View Ferris wheel. From about 50 meters above the ground, you can look out across Kamifurano and the Tokachidake mountains as the landscape changes color for fall.

Pick Up a Few Furano Souvenirs

Before heading home, make one final stop at Furano Marche.

The market brings together around 2,000 local products, including Furano wine, cheese, sweets, bread, fresh produce, processed foods, and local goods. If you are looking for a few last-minute souvenirs or something to bring home from your trip, it is one of the easiest places to find a wide selection in one stop.
