Explore Furano by Bike: A Scenic Lavender-Filled Cycling Adventure

Please note: photos are for illustrative purposes only.

Summer in Furano is all about color. Rolling green hills, vibrant flower fields, and—most famously—a sea of blooming lavender stretch as far as the eye can see. And what better way to take it all in than by bike?

Whether you’re a cycling enthusiast or a casual rider, cruising through the countryside by bike lets you fully immerse yourself in the sights, scents, and sounds of summer in Hokkaido.

Here’s a cycling route we recommend, covering around 70 km and taking roughly 3 hours, with plenty of scenic stops along the way:

Start: Nakafurano Station
Your adventure begins at Nakafurano Station. A rental bike shop is just a 5-minute walk away, so we recommend reserving your ride in advance to ensure availability—especially during peak lavender season.

Stop 1: Hokusei Lavender Garden
Hop on the sightseeing lift for sweeping views of lavender fields in full bloom. Three types of lavender and a variety of colorful flowers blanket the hillside. From the top of Hokusei Mountain, you’ll enjoy a panoramic view of Furano’s countryside backed by the majestic Tokachidake mountain range.

Stop 2: Farm Tomita
No trip to Furano is complete without a visit to Farm Tomita. This famous spot features over 80 kinds of flowers, including the iconic lavender. Try their signature lavender soft-serve ice cream—fragrant, floral, and truly one-of-a-kind. Don’t miss the gift shop filled with lavender-themed goods like soaps and potpourri.

Stop 3: Panorama Road Ehara
Designated as one of Kamifurano’s top scenic spots, this 5.3 km stretch offers wide-open views of the landscape. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the Tokachidake mountains. The contrast between the blue sky and the patchwork of farmland and pasture creates a stunning view—and cycling along this peaceful road is pure joy.

Stop 4: Roller Coaster Road
This thrilling 2.5 km stretch of rolling farmland road lives up to its nickname. With dramatic ups and downs, it’s a favorite for cyclists and photographers alike. Featured in the TV drama Yasashii Jikan, it offers an exhilarating ride and panoramic views of the mountains that define Hokkaido’s landscape.

Stop 5: Shikisai no Oka (Hill of Four Seasons)
With flower beds that seem to go on forever, this is one of the most colorful stops on the route. Around 30 types of seasonal blooms—from blue salvia to oriental poppies—can be seen here. You can also tour the grounds by tractor, buggy, or sightseeing cart. Grab a bite made with fresh local ingredients at the on-site restaurant before heading to your next destination.

Stop 6: Farm Tomita Lavender East
Just 4 km from the main farm, Lavender East is one of Japan’s largest lavender fields—home to around 90,000 plants. In peak season, it’s like riding through a purple dream, with views of Mt. Tokachi, Mt. Furano-nishi, and Mt. Ashibetsu rising behind the fields. It’s a picture-perfect stop that captures the magic of summer in Hokkaido.

Stop 7: Popura Farm
Wrap up your ride with a sweet treat at Popura Farm, known for its locally grown melons. Their signature dessert? A generous swirl of soft-serve ice cream served atop a freshly cut Furano melon. It’s the perfect refreshment and a great way to take a relaxing break before heading back.
