What to Pack, What to Wear, and How to Get Around

Planning your first trip to Hokkaido comes with plenty of questions — what to wear, what to pack, and how to navigate the area once you arrive. In late February, Furano begins to hint at spring, but it is still very much winter.

Daytime temperatures often remain below freezing, and overnight lows can drop to around −10°C (14°F) or lower. The landscape is breathtaking — wide-open fields blanketed in snow and crisp blue skies — but staying comfortable requires thoughtful preparation.

Located in the heart of Hokkaido, Furano is an inland city known for its particularly cold winters. Clear nights often lead to radiative cooling, meaning temperatures can fall quickly. Snow accumulation is common throughout town, and roads may be compacted with snow or covered in ice. Proper winter gear is essential not only for comfort, but for safety.

What to Wear: Layering Is Key

The foundation of winter dressing in Furano is layering.

Start with moisture-wicking or heat-retaining base layers (such as thermal or wool-blend undergarments) to prevent chills from perspiration. Add insulating layers like fleece, knitwear, or lightweight down to create warm air pockets. Finish with a windproof and waterproof outer layer — a quality down coat or snow jacket is ideal.

Because indoor spaces are well heated, choose clothing that’s easy to remove and adjust throughout the day.

Don’t forget accessories: knit hat or ear warmers, waterproof gloves, scarf or neck warmer, and thermal socks. Covering exposed skin makes a noticeable difference in subzero temperatures.

Footwear: The Most Important Decision

Proper footwear can make or break your winter experience.

Choose insulated, waterproof snow boots with strong traction soles designed for icy conditions. Pair them with thick socks or thermal tights for added warmth. Avoid regular sneakers or heeled shoes — they lack grip and insulation, and sidewalks can be slippery.

Winter Essentials to Pack

A few small items will greatly improve your comfort: hand warmers, waterproof spray (for boots and outerwear), sunglasses (snow glare can be intense), and a portable battery pack, as cold temperatures drain batteries faster.

With the right preparation, you’ll be free to fully enjoy Furano’s uniquely peaceful winter scenery.

Getting to Nozo Hotel

Nozo Hotel is easily accessible from New Chitose Airport, Asahikawa Airport, and Furano Station. Detailed directions are available on the hotel’s official website.

Winter Transportation in Furano & Biei

Furano and neighboring Biei cover a wide geographic area, and major attractions are often located several kilometers from train stations. Walking between sites is generally impractical — especially when temperatures hover around −10°C (14°F).

For a comfortable and efficient visit, transportation planning is essential.

Rental Car (For Confident Winter Drivers)

If you are experienced driving in snowy conditions, renting a car provides the greatest flexibility. This is especially true in Biei’s scenic hill area, where public transportation is limited.

If renting a vehicle, choose a 4WD vehicle with winter (snow) tires, avoid driving during snowstorm forecasts, and plan to finish long-distance driving before sunset. In winter, it gets dark around 4:00 PM (16:00). Winter roads require caution, and conditions can change quickly.

Public Transportation + Taxi

If you are not comfortable driving on snow-covered roads, combining trains and taxis is a practical and safe alternative.

The JR Furano Line connects Furano Station and Biei Station in approximately 35–45 minutes. Trains typically run about once per hour, so checking the schedule in advance is important.

Once in Biei, many visitors choose to charter a taxi for 2–3 hours to efficiently visit scenic spots. Local drivers are experienced in winter conditions, offering both safety and peace of mind.

Additionally, year-round bus services — including the Asahikawa Line “Lavender” bus — operate throughout winter, making sightseeing possible even without a car.

Choosing the Right Base for Your Stay

In winter, where you stay matters.

Nozo Hotel is centrally located in Furano, making it a convenient base for exploring the region. After a day in the snow, guests can unwind in the hotel’s open-air bath and sauna, easing away the chill while surrounded by winter scenery.

The restaurant highlights fresh ingredients sourced from Furano and across Hokkaido, thoughtfully prepared to showcase their natural flavors.

With warm hospitality, comfortable facilities, and a strategic location, Nozo Hotel offers an ideal winter retreat. Prepare well — and once you arrive, all that’s left to do is enjoy winter in Furano to the fullest.
