A more relaxed way to experience Hokkaido

Skiing might feel like a winter-only activity, but across Hokkaido, the season continues well into spring. As temperatures ease and the days grow longer, the experience shifts—less about peak conditions, more about flexibility, comfort, and pace.

In Furano, that balance comes naturally. Spend your morning on the slopes while conditions are still at their best, then head out in the afternoon to explore seasonal scenery, local food, and nearby spots. It’s an easy rhythm that lets you enjoy more in a single day.

Spring Skiing at Furano Ski Resort

Spring skiing comes with a different kind of appeal. The crowds thin out, and as the winter season winds down, many hotels and airlines begin offering more attractive rates, making it a great time to plan a trip.

You’ll still find plenty of snow—especially in the mornings—along with clearer days and wide-open views across Furano’s landscape. It’s a great time to ski at your own pace without the pressure of peak season.

During spring, skiing is available in the Furano Zone only, typically operating from late March through early May (around Golden Week), giving you a longer window to enjoy the season.

One of the highlights each year is the “Pond Skimming” event in early April, where skiers and snowboarders attempt to glide across a pool of water—part challenge, part spectacle.

As temperatures rise throughout the day, snow conditions tend to soften in the afternoon. For the best experience, start early, make the most of the morning, and leave the rest of the day open to explore.

After the Slopes: Discover Spring in Furano

Seasonal Scenery & Outdoor Spots

After a full morning on the mountain, spring is the perfect time to slow things down and take in Furano’s changing landscape.

Start with Farm Tomita, one of the region’s most iconic spots. While outdoor flower fields are still just beginning to bloom, the greenhouses offer a preview of the colorful scenery Furano is known for.

For cherry blossoms, head to Asahigaoka Park, where around 3,000 Ezo-yamazakura (Hokkaido wild cherry blossoms) bloom against the backdrop of the Tokachidake mountain range—one of the most scenic sakura views in the area.

If you’re up for a short drive, the Blue Pond in Biei is well worth the trip. Fed by melting snow, the water becomes even more vivid in spring, creating a striking contrast with the softer surrounding landscape.

Pairing a morning on the slopes with an afternoon of exploring is one of the easiest ways to make the most of the season.

Exploring the Town of Furano

Spring is also a great time to explore Furano at a slower pace.

Just minutes from the ski area, Ningle Terrace offers a unique setting tucked into the forest. This small collection of log cabins, curated by writer So Kuramoto, features handcrafted goods like candles, accessories, and one-of-a-kind pieces you won’t find anywhere else.

About 10 minutes away, the Furano Cheese Factory offers a more hands-on experience. You can learn about the cheese-making process, join workshops to make butter or ice cream, and enjoy freshly baked pizza topped with locally made cheese—Margherita is a favorite.

For something more relaxed, stop by the Furano Wine Factory, where you can tour the facilities and sample wines made from local grapes. Limited-edition bottles also make for great souvenirs.

And if you’re in the mood for something sweet, Campana Rokkatei is a great place to take a break. With open views of the Daisetsuzan mountains, it’s an easy stop for desserts, including their signature Furano Mochi—a soft rice cake filled with sweet green pea paste.

Unwind at Nozo Hotel

Located just minutes from Furano Ski Resort, Nozo Hotel makes it easy to move between the slopes and the surrounding area.

After a day of skiing, step into the hotel’s large public bath to warm up and reset. From there, you can head back out to explore or settle in for a slower evening.

With comfortable, thoughtfully designed rooms and a calm, welcoming atmosphere, Nozo Hotel is designed to support both sides of your trip—active mornings and relaxed afternoons.

Spring in Furano moves at a different pace. A little quieter, a little more flexible, and easy to enjoy your own way.
