Wine Tasting in Furano: Discover Hokkaido’s Hidden Wine Country

Sip, explore, and unwind—all from your home base at Nozo Hotel.

Furano might be best known for its flower fields and ski slopes, but did you know it’s also one of Japan’s top wine regions? Thanks to its cool climate, low rainfall, and dramatic temperature shifts between day and night, this mountain-surrounded area produces bold, beautifully colored grapes—perfect for making award-winning wines.

Wineries across Furano are embracing both tradition and innovation, with everything from classic barrel aging to sustainable, hands-off farming. Whether you’re a casual wine lover or a dedicated connoisseur, these unique local spots are well worth a visit.

Here are a few of our favorite wineries in the area:

Furano Wine House

This historic winery was the second to open in all of Hokkaido and has been perfecting its craft ever since. Take a tour of the aging cellar, where rows of oak barrels line the walls, each influencing the wine’s flavor in subtle but fascinating ways.

After your tour, head to the tasting counter or browse the shop for red, white, and limited-edition bottles—plus grape juice made right on site. If you’re visiting in summer, you’re in luck: the next-door lavender field is at its peak and adds even more charm to the experience.

Tada Farm

Located in Kamifurano, Tada Farm has over 120 years of agricultural history. Originally a vegetable farm, it has since evolved into a charming winery complete with a café and guesthouse. The farm sits against a picturesque backdrop of Mt. Tokachi, making it a scenic spot to sip and relax.

Tada Farm is known for its natural approach to winemaking—using no chemical fertilizers, herbicides, or added yeast. Instead, the wine is naturally fermented using wild yeast found on the grapes themselves, resulting in a flavor that truly captures the essence of Furano’s land. Their freshly made organic carrot juice is also a local favorite.

Domaine Raison

Domaine Raison is a sustainable winery dedicated to coexisting with nature. Set across 40 hectares of land, the winery uses goats to naturally maintain the grass, while their waste is returned to the soil as fertilizer. This cycle supports the growth of healthy, nutrient-rich grapes that are used to make wine with minimal human intervention—bringing out the pure, unfiltered character of each variety.

The property also includes a boutique shop and “goat café” where you can try their signature goat’s milk soft-serve ice cream. Visitors of all ages will enjoy the chance to feed the goats, making this a fun stop for families as well.
