As winter settles into Hokkaido, Furano transforms into a snowy retreat known for some of the lightest, driest powder in the world. The low moisture content creates that signature soft, airy snow that skiers return for year after year. It’s no surprise that Furano Ski Resort—one of Hokkaido’s premier mountains—draws visitors from across Japan and abroad every winter.

With opening day just around the corner, now is the perfect time to start planning your trip. Preparing well the night before makes a huge difference on the slopes, and at Nozo Hotel we make it easy to relax, reset, and get ready for an incredible first run. Below, you’ll find everything you need to know for ski season—opening dates, what to check before heading out, and how to make the most of your stay with us.

Furano Ski Resort: Opening Dates

Furano Ski Resort opens in stages depending on snow conditions:

Furano Zone — Scheduled to open November 29
This area typically receives snow earliest and is ideal for anyone eager to make their first turns of the season. Early mornings often offer the best conditions, and the slopes tend to be quieter right after opening.

Kitanomine Zone — Scheduled to open mid-December
Kitanomine opens a bit later and offers sweeping views over Furano town. By mid-December, snowfall is usually consistent and powder days become more frequent. Once both zones open, the variety of available runs increases dramatically.

What to Prepare Before Your Ski Day

A smooth start begins with a little planning. The evening before, take a few minutes to check your gear, confirm transportation, and look over the next day’s conditions so you can enjoy the slopes worry-free.

Check Your Ski Gear

Make sure your equipment is in good shape—whether it’s your own or a rental.

  • Wax:
Fresh wax makes a noticeable difference. If your skis feel dry or slow, touch them up or ask a rental shop for a quick tune.
  • Edges:
Look for rust or dullness. Sharp edges help with turns and braking, especially on colder, firmer snow.
  • Bindings:
Ensure screws are tight and there’s no looseness. Even slight movement can cause issues while skiing.
  • Outerwear:
Test the water repellency of your jacket and pants. If the fabric has lost its beading, a quick spray will help keep you warm and dry.
  • Rental Gear:
Double-check for cracks, missing pieces, or uncomfortable boot fits before leaving the shop.

Confirm Transportation

Taxis can book up quickly during peak times. We recommend reserving your ride to the slopes in advance and confirming pickup times the night before.

Check Weather and Snow Conditions

Winters in Furano are significantly colder than in most parts of Japan. Prepare for subzero temperatures with warm layers—down jackets, windproof mid-layers, insulated gloves, hats, neck warmers, and pocket warmers.
For exploring town before your ski day, choose footwear with good traction to avoid slipping.
