Furano’s unique mix of landscapes provide the perfect environment for diverse bird species and is often a bucket list destination for both casual and serious birdwatchers from around the world. Here are a few of the most sought after species.

Ural Owl: These nocturnal birds are often spotted in the forests surrounding Furano. Their haunting calls can be heard at night, and if you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of one perched silently on a branch.

Blakiston’s Fish Owl: One of the rarest and most elusive birds in Japan, this massive owl is a prized sight for birdwatchers around the world. While sightings are extremely rare in Furano, the surrounding areas of Hokkaido offer a chance to see this majestic bird.

Japanese Robin: Known for its bright orangish red chest, this small bird is often seen flitting through the underbrush during the day. Its unique morning song is a favorite of many Furano Locals.

Steller’s Sea Eagle: Though more commonly seen in winter along Hokkaido’s coasts, these magnificent eagles sometimes venture inland. With their distinct black and white feathers, they are a breathtaking sight against Furano’s colorful landscape.

Wildlife Spotting

Along with birds, the diverse ecosystems in Furano support a wide range of mammals, including several rare, but very rewarding sights.

Ezo Deer: A common but graceful sight in the fields and forests around Furano, these deer are most active during the early morning and late afternoon. Their large antlers and elegant stature make them a favorite among wildlife photographers.

Hokkaido Red Fox: This iconic animal of Hokkaido is often seen trotting along roadsides or hunting in open fields. Their striking red fur and bushy tails make them easily recognizable. They are primarily nocturnal, but on rare (and somewhat lucky) occasions, they can be spotted in the early morning and late afternoon.

Ezo Sable: A small, elusive mammal belonging to the weasel family, the Ezo Sable was once frequently hunted for its luxurious warm fur. Luckily however, hunting for these cute animals has decreased significantly in recent years and the population has flourished in Hokkaido due to their efficient hunting and scavenging abilities. The Ezo Sable is primarily nocturnal and extremely difficult to spot. They are known to inhabit the dense forests around Furano and spent a majority of their time in burrows underground.

Hokkaido Brown Bear: While sightings are rare due to their secretive nature and the vast wilderness they roam, the Hokkaido Brown Bear is the largest terrestrial predator in Japan. While encounters with these bears are extremely rare, travelers and hunters are instructed to keep a safe distance as they can often become aggressive if threatened.

The Most Elusive Sight

Among the many species that call Furano home, the Blakiston’s Fish Owl stands out as the most elusive and rare sight. Known as the largest owl species in the world, this incredible bird is critically endangered, with only a few hundred individuals remaining in the wild. Spotting one is a once in a lifetime experience for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts alike.

While enjoying the wildlife of Furano, it’s important to respect their natural environment. At Nozo Hotel, we encourage our guests to follow local guidelines for wildlife observation, ensuring that these animals can thrive in their natural habitats for generations to come.
