Each year, around mid-November, Furano transforms into a breathtaking winter wonderland. Here in Furano, winter isn’t just a season—it’s a full-blown celebration. From shimmering light displays to thrilling snow activities, our town offers unique events that capture the spirit of the season and invite you to experience the magic for yourself.

One of the highlights of winter is Furano Kankan Mura, a snow and ice village that comes alive with over 60,000 colorful lights. This enchanting space offers something for everyone. Try the exhilarating snow tube course, a 201-meter-long slide that takes you through illuminated arches. Alternatively, warm up inside the Snow Dome Café, where you can enjoy hot drinks and local sake while sitting at tables made entirely of snow and ice. For adventure seekers, snow rafting—where snowmobiles pull rafts across the snow—is a must-try. There’s also the chance to experience dog sledding with friendly Siberian Huskies, a fun and memorable way to glide through the snowy landscape.

Another event to mark on your calendar is the Furano Bonchi Powder Festival at Furano Ski Resort. This lively festival is filled with exciting activities, from food stalls and festival games to cultural performances. One standout is the Color Torch Skiing event, where skiers holding glowing torches create a mesmerizing display on the slopes. Traditional drumming performances, known as Yasaka Daiko, add a touch of local culture. The festival kicks off with a spectacular fireworks show, setting the festive tone. Be sure to check out the competitive events, including a rafting race and a giant slalom for young skiers.

As the new year approaches, join us for the Kita no Daimonji Fire Festival, a long-standing tradition. At midnight on New Year’s Day, torches form a massive “大” symbol on the snowy slopes of Mt. Tokachi, representing wishes for safety and prosperity. The sight of this glowing symbol, accompanied by a dazzling fireworks display, is an unforgettable way to welcome the new year.

For a magical evening, visit the Blue Pond in Biei. While the pond’s vibrant blue waters are a summer attraction, its winter light-up reveals a different kind of beauty. Snow-covered and bathed in soft lights, it feels like stepping into a dream. Another favorite spot is Ningle Terrace, a charming area of log cabins selling handcrafted goods. When dusted with snow and lit by twinkling lights, it looks and feels like something straight out of a storybook.

Throughout the season, fireworks light up the skies across Furano. At Asahigaoka Park, the Furano Long-Run Fireworks take place every few nights from December to March, with a special display on New Year’s Eve. The New Furano Prince Hotel also hosts a countdown event, where fireworks mark the arrival of the new year, creating a stunning spectacle against the crisp winter sky.
